Phlegm does some amazing graffiti stuff on walls, as seen HERE

He also makes some lovely zines. I got ISSUE 3 in a swap with him. It houses some really nice and intricate pen artwork. Kind of creepy tall figures hanging around abandoned houses and hanging off hot air balloons. So, lot's of weirdness (which of course is my taste)

The printing is really nice, and the paper feels like moleskine.. Anyway, go get a copy. It's only £3!

I was asked by Tetsunori to contribute some artwork for this exhibition to raise money for the Japanese eartquake/tsunami appeal.

I couldn't attend, but Tetsunori chronicled the expo on the website. I really hope lots of money was raised to help the victims of this horrible event.

INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS JACK OF THE ROUTES

I love finding stuff. I love scouring flickr for images and youtube for obscure and interesting musical finds. I first found The Routes from finding a video of Chris doing a one-man band song. I really loved the guitar sound and just the fact there was this English guy in Japan playing the music he loved in a band called The Routes. A great stripped back garage sound with a real knack for a catchy tune. I had to become a fan.

Anyway, I got in touch and Chris was kind enough to answer some questions.

Okay, maybe we can start by giving us a quick history of the band?
I came to Japan in 2000, having married a girl called Yoko Ono (not joking). I was doing an office job in London at the time, living in Herne Hill. I couldn't see any future for myself, and I was tired of living in UK. Once I met Yoko, I decided to just give up everything and leave for a new life.
I wanted to form a band ever since I arrived in Japan, but didn't know anybody and couldn't speak Japanese. After about two years of living in Japan, a foreign friend introduced me to Masao (the original drummer), and we started a punk band called The Facials. We weren't very good. We did it for a few years, with the owner of a local venue doing bass duties for us. It became increasingly difficult to play because the bass player would work most evenings. One evening we did play, we played with a Japanese blues guitarist called Sano Masaru. It totally changed my approach to music. I think in England we don't aspire to play well because it's "not cool". I decided to lose my English cool, and change the direction of the band. We wrote totally new material (taking huge influence from Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Pretty Things, and Downliners Sect), and went through numerous bass players... I tried to approach music from in the way that bands did in the 60s, and aspired to play like those musicians. The lineup finally settled, and I recorded the first album using a giant Tascam MKII 4 track cassette recorder that Masao gave me. I put the tracks online and Andy McGibbon (Motorsounds Records/Bonnevilles) got in touch with us offering to release our album.

You seem to have a sweet selection of guitars. You have a favourite?
I really love vintage guitars. I remember as a kid always being fascinated by guitars, and I have a really vivid memory of standing in a guitar shop aged about 12, staring at a Vox Organ Guitar in amazement. When I came to Japan I didn't have a guitar. Upon arriving here and looking in a guitar magazine, I was shocked to see the amount of vintage guitars for sale in Japan. There are 1000s! I guess when the economy was good, the Japanese went to US/UK and went crazy importing guitars. I spoke to one guy that was importing about ten to fifteen 1960s Fender Jaguars a week! So yeah, I've accumulated a lot of guitars. My favourite guitar is my 1967 Vox Starstream. When I was a kid I saw the video for Spacemen 3's Revolution and was totally fascinated by the guitar Sonic Boom was using (a Starstream XII). Ever since that it was my dream guitar. Amongst other stuff I have is a 1967 Vox Aristocrat, a 1968 Vox Astro Bass, a 1967 Vox Constellation bass, a 1967 Vox Apollo, a 1966 Vox Phantom, a 2005 Gibson ES335, and a 1967 Yamaha SG3. I'm always selling and buying stuff. It's a bit of an addiction.

What got me into garage was the rawness of the music. What got you into garage punk?
For me personally, nothing sounds as good as just a guitar, a drum kit, a bass and vocals (organ optional)... The simple format has the most impact for me... You can be as witty or fancy as you want with your lyrics, and use crazy chords or fancy time signatures, but compare it to someone playing 3 chords... You can douse everything in crazy effects, use the latest synths, vocoders, sequencers and crap, but put it next to a raw live band with 3 chords... There's a reason this basic format has thrived through the decades whether it be rockabilly, garage, blues, punk, whatever... It's a full proof formula. It doesn't age poorly, it's far from self-indulgent, it doesn't lose energy... With the same three chords you can make any kind of song you want. It's all you need. It's timeless.
I also love the imperfections in old recordings, like the hiss and distortion. It gives the music atmosphere and personality as opposed to the dry sterile perfect sounds that we hear today. You can hear the real sound that was happening in that room.

Why do you think the 60's was such a great time for music?
I think that people's approach to making music was different. People aspired to be and took influence from something great. Look at Rolling Stones, Animals, and Yardbirds taking influence from Bo Diddley, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters etc... Then look at the hordes of one hit wonder teenagers in America that took influence from the British invasion. They were not quite as good as what they aspired to be, the product was always interesting and original in itself. I don't think there was as much to aspire to in the 80s, 90s, 00s. Unfortunately these days people aspire to be cool or fashionable, as opposed to aspiring to be great.

If you could arrange a live bill of your favourite groups (dead or alive), who'd be on the list?
Would they be brought by time machine? If so, Beggars Banquet era Rolling Stones, early 60s Bo Diddley, 13th Floor Elevators, Wailers, Seeds, and '66 Elvis, and Hound Dog Taylor. How bizarre would that be?

You do quite a few covers live. How do you go about choosing them - is it about choosing what you like or choosing something the crowd might know?
It's down to circumstances. We disbanded for a while in late 2007-2008, when Masao had to leave the band because of his job. When Shinchan came, we started to play purely for fun at first, so we all played covers, slowly introducing original material as time went by. We chose the songs that we liked playing/hearing. A lot of the stuff you can see on youtube is from the year or so we played all covers. Nowadays our live set consists of 80% plus original material.

From what I've seen, Japan has quite a lot of great garage rock bands. Is there a good scene there?
Haha, where we live there are 3 garage bands. Us, The Paralyze and La-La Lee's. There are quite a few mountains between us and the other two bands, but we are all extremely close friends. What with there being only 3 bands, I can't even call it a scene. In Tokyo there is a big scene of course, but we're not really involved with it. We just do our own little thing oblivious to whatever else is going on. I think that's actually helped us a lot.

I've seen you doing that one man band thing. I remember reading that Hasil Adkins started doing the one man band thing as when he heard songs on the radio he didn't realise that there was more than one person on the record. Is it something you enjoy doing?
The one man band thing was just down to circumstances. When the original drummer Masao left, I couldn't find a worthy replacement for a long time. I was really frustrated. It was the only option at the time, if I wanted to continue to play music. The promoters who were asking for The Routes totally loved it, as did many of the people coming to watch. They obviously didn't know about Hasil Adkins... On a good night I'd be really good, but on a bad night I'd just want to curl up behind the bass drum and die of embarrassment. It was pretty lonely too. Much more fun playing with my mates. The first gig was shockingly bad. I could barely finish one song. That was the night I met our current drummer Shinchan . I saw him play live, and he was like the perfect potential band member. Once I got the band up and running again, I decided to knock the one man band on the head.

Tell us about the new album you have coming out?
We have a new album called "Alligator" coming out on Dirty Water Records in April 2011. The album contains 11 original songs, and will be available as a CD, LP or download. In comparison to our first album, there is a lot more of a US garage influence present, and less UK rhythm and blues. I think there is a lot more variation this time. You can hear a preview on our Reverb Nation page (sorry, we gave up on myspace and deleted it completely). We recorded the album ourselves as usual.

What places have been the most receptive to your music?
We're going to Europe for the first time in April. We're very excited.
We played in Shanghai last year. Shanghai is amazing. There is a huge international community, snd people go wild! I'm looking forward to going back there next week.
As far as Japan goes, I like Osaka. We played there for the first time a few weeks ago, and the atmosphere was great.

How do you go about choosing album and flier art? Are you into art at all?
I studied fine art at college about 18 years ago. I used to like art until I had to study and write about comtemporary art in the early 90s. I enjoyed looking at art a lot more when I was totally ignorant. Thankfully 18 years have passed, and I have forgotten everything I learned, and I'm happily ignorant once again. The only art I've looked at since then has been record covers and flyers. I've always been fascinated with record covers. For me record covers can bring back so many memories.
Up until recently I've been quite lazy in choosing album and flyer art, and generally relied on photography. Last year I picked up a copy of Bananas magazine. I really liked the simple often humorous illustrations. It's illustrated by a French guy called Christophe Lopez-Huici, based in New York. He also does stuff for Shindig magazine, as well as posters for events. We approached Christophe to come up with something for our new album, and a Europe Tour poster. We are very happy with the results. I can't think of another record cover that looks like ours.

Anything coming up (singles, gigs etc) that you want to mention?
As well as the new album "Alligator" coming out on Dirty Water Records, we have a 7" single coming out on Portugal's Groovie Records. It's a cover of the song "Stormy" by Jesters of Newport. The B side is a cover of "Willie The Wild One" by William The Wild One. It's limited to 500 copies, and the first 100 copies are in blue vinyl. We recorded a bunch covers at the same time as the album.
We also have a very limited split single coming out on New York label Go Ape Records, featuring ourselves, The Paralyze, and Los Wakamonos. The single contains three songs (an original instrumental track from each band). The single was mastered by Tim Warren (Crypt Records). It should be out around April 2011.

Finally, what for you is GOOD (something you enjoy and like) and what is EVIL ?(something you hate or think is fucked up)
Ah, that's a difficult one. I have to be careful what I say in case my mum ever sees this. Something I enjoy and like?
Japan! First thing that comes to mind.

The first is an A4 size (I think) silk screen zine of his work. I love his work and the colours used are great.

The second is a collab zine with other artists called Image Sucree. It's full colour and has lots of sweet work by Judex, Miruki Tusko and others.

I'm kind of bored with the whole buy and buyer relationship with Good vs Evil. Some people I know who buy and some are completely unknown.

To break this, and so I can know more and see more art from people who buy our stuff, I am running this new project thing here.

With every order of Good sv Evil stuff I will include one of the new postcards seen above. I want the buyers who get them to draw something on them and photo/scan it and email them to me. I will make a new gallery of postcard art on the website and blog where every artist will be named and linked.

Alex Cox interview

Whenever I talk about film to people I always bring up Alex Cox. I do this as Alex Cox, for me, is an example of what film can acheive. When I read about Alex having funding problems, I realise that film is doomed.
I first watched Repo Man when I was about 14. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen. I wasn't interested in Star Wars or anything like that, no Repo Man was what got me interested in film. Here was a film playing with conventions, playing with symbolism, and making social commentary - this wasn't some Hollywood blandism. No, this was the work of a great director with a unique vision.
I could go on all night about his films which I love, Sid and Nacy, Three Businessmen, and the recent Searchers 2.0, but instead here is a short interview with Alex Cox himself.
You can notice again that I ask stupid questions. It's times like this I wish I was better at this sort of thing, so I don't have to end up sounding like an idiot. Anyway...

GVE: Can you tell me how and why you got into film?*

ALEX: The answer can be found in the pages of my book X Films, which your
readers might enjoy.

GVE: Has your attitude towards film (what it is and could be) changed over
the years?

ALEX: Yes, I was very passionate about feature films when I was younger
and thought making them the most important thing, at least for me.
I no longer think this.

GVE: Westerns are a massive influence for you, as seen in the recent
Searchers 2.0, what is it about this genre that you like?

ALEX: It's a great genre, very pure and malleable. But perhaps past its due
date.

GVE: Has it been a battle for you to work on films the way you would like? Has making movies become easier or more fun now you work more independently?

ALEX: Always a battle. Easier because one gets better at something by doing
it more. More fun? About the same.

GVE: Because they are such cult classics how do you feel now about Repo Man,Sid and Nancy?

ALEX: I like Repo Man, but am unhappy with the end of Sid & Nancy, which seems
sentimental and a cop-out.

Your writing seems such a good fit for the recent Waldo graphic novel. Any plans for more comics?

ALEX: I've done some Godzilla comic books also, and most recently the illustrations
for a children's book -- an anarchist fairy tale by Danbert Nobacon,
entitled 3 DEAD PRINCES.

GVE: I heard you were contacted to direct Running Man. I really can't imagine you being a normal 'director for hire'.. is Hollywood and you a good mix really?

ALEX: Seemingly not, as that was the last Hollywood film I was offered.

GVE: Is it also true that you were kind of blacklisted in Hollywood after Walker? Walker is a fantastic film, so is Hollywood such a fickle place?*

ALEX: I don't know if fickle is the word. How about corrupt and evil?

GVE: You are well know for being a punk director. What was punk to you, and
is it an influence on your work?*

ALEX: It was a revolutionary movement, as well as a music thing. That was
what I liked the best about it. Still waiting for the Revolution, though.

GVE: What did you make of the government's decision to cut the film council?

ALEX: Excellent. Independent British cinema doesn't benefit from London-based
bureaucrats in a snazzy office earning a hundred thousand pounds a year. But it does need money! And state support for production and distribution.

GVE: What do you make of this Clegg/Cameron coalition thing?

ALEX: I have no opinion. I am glad they cancelled the extra runway at
Heathrow & the ID cards. But my vote is always for the Greens.

GVE: Growing up, Moviedrome was such an inspiration. What I really enjoyed was your enthusiasm for the films. Is your passion for films and film making the same as it ever was? *

ALEX: Nope.

GVE: I still have my prized version of Repo Man with the funny edits in (melon farmers etc) Just for people who don't know can you explain the problems you had with the studio and how happy were you with the finished film?

ALEX: Read my book.

GVE: Any new films or projects coming up that you want to mention?*

ALEX: STRAIGHT TO HELL RETURNS, with long-deleted scenes, digitally-enhanced
violence and cruelty, a 5.1 stereo track, and a new color scheme by Tom Richmond, the
DP.

GVE: Finally, what is GOOD (something you enjoy or like) and what is EVIL (something that you hate or annoys you)*

ALEX: Good is my dog, Pearl. Evil is the studio system and the lousy bloated
movies and violent, stupid mind-set it promotes.

But soon they turn to fighting each other, the fighting turns quickly to lustful and murderous activity…

Some years ago I discovered the electric eels cd 'Eyeball of Hell' cd. The cd was a collection of the band's rehearshal and home tapes recorded around 1975. The opening track 'agitated', with the lyrics, ' It's five a.m. and I'm crawling the walls, waiting for imaginary telephone calls, you know what I think, I think the whole world stinks, and I don't need no shrink, I just hate it,' had me hooked in. After reading up on the history with the stories of fighting, being banned in clubs, fighting with policemen, leaving town from fucking too many husband's wives, you knew this is what punk rock should be.

Actually most of the reports of violence, and fucking, seem to concern the guitarist John D. Morton, so who better to ask questions to? I emailed John, who is also a fine artist, to ask him some questions.

GVE: I read at that at the start of The Electric Eels you saw yourselves as art terrorists and nihilists.

JOHN: F.Y.I. (with out snottiness) electric eels is not capitalized. Dave E.'s call.
I stridently was (and am) a nihilist. Nihilist, as in ‘nothing can be proven.’ I did send death threats to artists I didn't like and suicide notes to other people, like my mom. This was born of the Dadaist tradition.

GVE: For you, do you think the electric eels achieved everything you set out to do?

JOHN: No, we fully expected to be a mammoth success on the level of Roxy Music, the Stooges or the Dolls. I am grateful that the eels received some degree of posthumous recognition, but I really was looking forward to driving around in that god damn gilded fucking Hummer.

GVE: You had this reputation as a kind of tough guy who liked to fight and fuck (Stories of beating up policeman and having to leave town from fucking too many men's wives)

JOHN: Yes, tough & fuck was true. Along with nihilism was a deadly combination of a giant sense of entitlement and grandiosity.

GVE: Was this really true and was the music you were producing a real representation of your character?

JOHN: Yes. Ear splitting industrial guitars and lyrics like (mine) "Giganto has had it with you, Fucks." & Dave E.'s "You know what I think? I think the whole world stinks & I don't need no shrink, I just hate it." That was our character.

GVE: For me you were tougher, cruder, louder and with more attitude than all the other punk bands that followed. . What did you make of the punk explosion?

JOHN: Left out & "Oh, now you get it!"

GVE: The electric eels (and even your newer band The New Fag Mother Fuckers) set out to offend and shake shit up (the use of the swastika etc Which seems to offend people even though you are Jewish)

JOHN: Paul Marotta stated the situation accurately when he said, "I thought we were Lenny Bruce, our friends thought we were Adolf Hitler." I am not Jewish (but my sister is, does that count?) The following is not a justification to my use of the swastika; A number of bands with Jewish members used the swastika and Nazi memorabilia, The Ramones, The Dictators and Kiss (well, Kiss was never punk.)

It was my (or our) wish to shake people up, however people just saw a swastika and reacted. Do you think calling the people that were previously known as Indians, ‘Native Americans’ settles our distribution of small pox blankets? Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. I could go on FOREVER on this subject!

Finally, to quote former San Francisco State University president, S. I. Hayakawa. Hayakawa was called a pig during the 68-69 student strikes. As a semanticist, he knew in fact he was a human being and not a pig, so his reply to the taunt was, “I am not a pig.”

GVE: What first got me into your work was the awesome cover of the Eyeball of Hell. Can you tell me how you got into art and what were your influences?

JOHN: I was precocious in art. I was kicked out of Sunday School (Lakewood Congregational Church) when I depicted a crayon tableau with the church afire. There were all these neat portrayals of beatnik (Tuli Kupferberg preferred the term bohemian) artists in the movies when I was growing up in the 60's. Louie Nye riding a tricycle dripping paint off the back wheels in 'The Wheeler Dealers' says to a visitor, "If you're going to walk on my canvas, the least you can do is put a little crimson on your soles." Paul Newman in ' What a Way to Go! ' and Sir Alec in 'The Horse's Mouth.' It seemed like such a wonderful life. I wanted to go to espresso bars and be served macchiatos by Walter Paisley (Dick Miller's character in Corman's "Bucket of Blood.") Since I no longer take drugs or drink I have been relegated to making my own espressos at home. Hey! Where's my fucking beret?

GVE: what were your influences?

JOHN: Art came first. Being a musician was part of art for me. The Dadaists, early conceptualists, Rodin's 'Thinker' (our Thinker (cleveland's) had been blown up with a pipe bomb, cool,) The ‘Armor Court' @ the Cleveland Museum of Art replete with a giant [fake] Rubens 'Diana and Her Nymphs' featuring a plethora of naked breasts and horny satyrs. A painting of St. John's head being served up on a platter. What could possibly be better?

GVE: What's your preferred medium?

JOHN: I have worked in almost anything. Computer generated work, drawing, sculpture, painting, photography, performance art (see 'Johnny & the Dicks'). It depends a lot on time and space and available funds.

GVE: Your websites you designed are great, I saw you studied web design. What made you want to get into that?

JOHN: I thought I might earn a little do-re-me. It was the first time I worked with computers. I was surprised to find out I was good at it. The Dot Com biz dove and I was left with a creative skill that doesn’t earn money, like the rest of my many esoteric avocations.

GVE: Is art and music a full time job or do you have another job now?

JOHN: Last year I grossed over $700 in art & music combined! I am formally trained as a alcohol and substance abuse counselor. I'm endeavoring to gain employment in the field. What else is an old junkie to do?

I am hoping to cash in big with my memoirs. So far I only have the title, "I."

GVE: Any projects/shows etc coming up that you want to mention?

JOHN: Re-releasing the X____X singles with additional material is being bandied about, and my unauthorized autobiography, "I" which should be out in early 2011. I am doing comedy videos on YouTube which I am sure will lead to a grass roots swelling that I am sure will lead to a lucrative stand up career.

GVE: Finally, what for you is Good (something you really enjoy) and what is Evil (something that really annoys you?)

JOHN: Good.

HAIR AND DIAMONDS INTERVIEW

I came across the work of Christopher P. Mcmanus (otherwise known as the man behind Hair and Diamonds) one day looking for something else on youtube. What a find it was! I watched all his short films, that mix weird animation with puppets and animation, and became an instant fan.

1) Please give a brief introduction of yourself and your work.

My name is Christopher P. McManus. I'm the creator of Hair and Diamonds. Hair and Diamonds is my body of video work where I experiment with puppets, animation, and video.

2) How and why did you start Hair and Diamonds?

I was previously working in sculpture, making masks and furniture. I moved to Philadelphia and lost my studio space. That was the Fall of 2008. I started experimenting with digital art and collages. I wanted to create something that was more expressly interactive so I started making animation and short films with a digital point-and-shoot camera. Also, The Recession had a lot to do with it. I was unemployed when I started Hair and Diamonds.

3) Are you self-taught?

I took some art classes in college but I'm mostly self-taught.

4) Who are your influences?

Ray Harryhausen, Terry Gilliam, Luci Fulci, George A. Romero, David Cronenberg, 1980s movies and cartoons, He-Man, Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, George Saunders, Tatsuya Yoshida, Problem Child Trilogy, YouTube, The Internet, math and science.

5) How important is music in your projects?

It's important. I write and perform all the music in my films. However, I would feel uncomfortable co-opting a piece of music that wasn’t written specifically for a scene.

6) What's the process on a project?

First, I come up with the plot. Usually the plots are animation or puppets intensive, so then I start working on the puppets and drawings. As I work on those, I figure out how to shoot it. Then I throw myself into it and get started. This next project, Suburban Warlock, is slightly different. I've written a script and done some storyboarding. This time I'm working with a few more people so I’m approaching it a little differently. The process is becoming more organized.

7) Has it been difficult to get an audience for your films?

I don't know, but everyday I’m hustling!

8) Is there a certain aesthetic you go for in your work?

I think freestyle and handmade comes across as the aesthetic, but it’s not thought about or planned. It’s because there’s no budget. Everything is handmade. I guess the aesthetic I am going for has more to do with my work ethic:
1) more is more
2) work with what you have
3) don’t over think.

9) Why the name Hair and Diamonds?

Hair and Diamonds started as digital collages. Hair and jewelry always look good in magazines so I thought that that combination would work in collages. Also, I always want to capture the hard and soft in everything I make.

10) You make films, make masks, puppets, paint etc. Is there one medium you prefer?

Not really. I feel most satisfied when I complete any project. I like film because it incorporates all the elements you mention

11) You want to tell me what's going on with SUBURBAN WARLOCK?

I'm making the props now and hopefully I'll start shooting in the next few weeks. I'm having a show in November I want to have it finished for. I just finished a new promo for it and I sewed the Warlock's cloak.

12) Any projects or other things coming up that you want to mention?

After Suburban Warlock, I hope to get started on a zombie-film-meets-cooking-show idea called The Last Supper. I also have some collaborative work with other artists coming.

13) Finally, what for you is Good and what is Evil?

I don't know. It's hard to judge good and evil. I guess it depends what society you are in and how others judge your actions. Usually the constellation of events leading up to most actions is complex and the descriptors of good and evil reduce actions too easily. It’s easier for me to think about extremes. Extreme good would be willingness to help others with no benefit to yourself. Extreme evil would be willingness to benefit yourself even if it means harming others. Hair and Diamonds is GOOD! Watch it and be extremely good to one another!

Archie Fitzgerald sent me a copy of his zine. It charts two weeks when he and two friends hitchhiked from Bristol towards Scotland. The zine tells about the people and cars on the journey.

It is a fun zine which fills my eyes with colour and strange characters. Thankfully, there are no creepy truck drivers talking about rape or anything like that.

HEIKO MULLER INTERVIEW

Heiko is great. Really great. So great he makes you want to get your paints out and try harder. I first saw his work at the time I was putting together the first issue of Good vs Evil. I was looking at a lot of artists pages and then I found Heiko's. I was drawn in by his mixture of high art and landscapes with these playful and comic elements. Truly surreal and fun. Anyway, after contacting him to be involved in the first Good vs Evil I also found he was a straight up nice guy as well. You can see he loves what he does and is passionate about the work he produces.

Anyway, here is a short interview I conducted with Heiko. If you want to see more of Heiko go say hello HERE

1) So if we begin at the beginning. How did you get started in art?
I grew up with two elder brothers (9 and 15 years older) who both liked to paint and draw. Both were Dalí fans and aimed at similar effects in their works. They displayed an incredible patience doing that, and in the end they came up with pictures that put quite an impression on their little brother. I wanted to do that too, and so, when I was about seven, I started painting and drawing myself, very closely following my brothers' footsteps and those of their idols. Both my brothers stopped painting at some stage. I didn't. Although I once came close.

2) How would you describe your art to those who haven't seen it?
If someone asks me that at a party, I always tend to spout some kind of nonsense or commonplaces, like "I'm painting animals and landscapes". Usually I'm embarrassed right afterwards and attempt to save the situation by calling up my flickr page on the cell phone to show a few examples. I'm really having trouble finding a description that applies to all of my paintings.

That's why I'd prefer to quote Colin Johnson here, who once said of one of my pictures: "Like a Bob Ross painting gone horribly wrong!"

3) What are /were your influences?
As I mentioned above, I started studying the surrealists at a rather early age, but I've also always been fascinated with the Old Masters. That interest waned a bit during my art school days, during which I called Cy Twombly and Mike Kelley my favourites. I must also add my friends Till Gerhard and Henning Kles to the list. Till allowed me to work in his studio for a year. He used to work in the daytime while I showed up the evenings, so that we met only rarely. Still it was an enormous inspiration to watch his paintings taking shape. Till, Henning and I will exhibit together in November. This will be our third three-man-show.

4) I see in your art lots of references to nature. What is your relationship with nature?
I love nature. I like to climb hills and look down into valleys. I like the sea. I like forests. What captures me most of all are those rare fleeting moments you encounter in nature: spotting a clearing from the darkness of the forest, a sunlit landscape with a very dark rain front behind it, but also a short glimpse of a roe deer in the woods.There's this split second when the animal freezes and catches your eye. I always want this moment to last for a very long time (which it won't of course), as it exudes a very special kind of atmosphere, which is impossible to capture in a photograph. This is exactly what I want to pin down in a painting. Of course, it isn't really doable, but getting as close to it as possible is what's driving me.

5) What's your preferred medium?
That would be oil. I like painting on canvas but wood and paper have their merits too.
Three years ago I noticed that I can't handle acrylics anymore. I was asked to participate in a large group show in LA and the deadline was so close that I didn't stand a chance to finish an oil painting. So I picked up acrylics again after so many years, only to despair of them. Then I decided to make a virtue of my lack of skills and started scrawling to my heart's content. That turned out to be fun, so I started a new series of paintings. Take a look at the Gangland paintings as an example. I then transferred that experience back to oil paintings. You can see what came of it for example in "Untitled (Mad Bear)".

6) What I also like about you is that you submit to so many art zines and magazines. Do you think zines have helped your art career?
Absolutely. To be honest, I don't think they helped me to a great deal more or catch a gallerist's attention. I do think however that submitting to zines boosted my confidence quite a bit, and I consider confidence as essential for painting good pictures.

7) Besides Good vs Evil obviously what are other art magazines that you like?
I happen to like those magazines better that are made by a small group or even one single art-loving person alone. Good vs Evil is a good example for that. The Color-Ink-Book by the Brothers Washburn from LA is great, too; and so is La Cruda by Nacho Simal from Spain. Of German magazines, I particularly like Low Magazine and GRIMM. My favourite glossy is EMPTY by Design is Kinky from Australia. I'd also have to add Cafe Royal Books here. And the list goes on and on...

8) What is going on with this Welcome to Omsk thing?
If I only had an idea. This is really crazy stuff. It seems a couple of Russians (apparently from Saint Petersburg) decided to declare Winged Doom, a figure I created some years ago, the mascot of Omsk. Within Russia, the city appears to be prominently known for drug abuse and violence, so at first I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Then somehow the thing took a life on its own. More and more people began to create new, often highly elaborate works based on my painting and would then post them on a message board. I started collecting them, but now I have over 300 and lost track. And as soon as I think that interest is waning, I find a new site where more pictures are posted. There are even two videos on YouTube now showing three blokes on some manga convention, running around dressed up as my character. Just type in "Winged Doom". I'm still having mixed feelings about that, although I probably should feel flattered. For a short period I was even mentioned in the Wikipedia entry on Omsk. Of course, that was deleted after a short while.

9) What things are you working on/ shows coming up/books coming out etc?
In the next couple of days I'll send nine new pictures to group shows in Milan (Galleria Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea) and New York (Bold Hype Gallery). For November, I'm planning an exhibition with my friends Henning Kles and Till Gerhard at Feinkunst Krüger. I still wasn't able to start painting for it, though. December will see the fifth installment of Don't Wake Daddy. That's a group show featuring artists from all over the world, which I curate once a year. In March I'll take part in another group show in Malmö and at the end of next year I'll have another single show at the Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco. So there's quite a bit of schedule ahead of me.

A4, full colour eye fuck, with different size pages, and featuring a whacking amount of artists. One zine called VULPES SUS FRATER and is a semi fictional story of Brotherhood. It has these fantastic photos and drawings that look real evil. The other is a zine based on bricks.
